Photovoltaics were initially used to power small and medium-sized applications, from the calculator powered by a single solar cell to off-grid homes powered by a photovoltaic array.

Solar power plants can face high installation costs, although this has been decreasing due to the learning curve. Developing countries have started to build solar power plants, replacing other sources of energy generation.

Solar power has great potential, but in 2008 supplied only 0.02% of the world’s total energy supply. However, use has been doubling every two, or less, years, and at that rate solar power, which has the potential to supply over 1,000 times the total consumption of energy, would become the dominant energy source within a few decades.

Since solar radiation is intermittent, solar power generation is combined either with storage or other energy sources to provide continuous power, although for small distributed producer/consumers, net metering makes this transparent to the consumer. On a larger scale, in Germany, a combined power plant has been demonstrated, using a mix of wind, biomass, hydro-, and solar power generation, resulting in 100% renewable energy.

The idea of solar energy started over 100 years ago, but the technology hasn’t been as great as it is until today. With companies finding new ways to use renewable energy resources, solar energy is going to be more important. Solar energy is one of the best renewable energy sources because it is so abundant. We’ll never have a sun drought, we’ll never have to wait for the sun to pick up nor will we have to drill into earth like with many of the other renewable energy resources. However, to use solar power, we need solar panels. Solar panels are important because without them the idea of solar energy would be useless.

Solar panels work in two different ways. First there are solar cells that convert light energy into electricity. This is a little on the expensive side, which doesn’t make it as popular as the way energy is used now. However, they are found on a number of products. Space shuttles and satellites use them. Parts of these are covered in solar panels. These objects have the space for all the panels it would need. Another way to use solar panels is by using the heat from the sun. The solar panel attracts the heat and heats up a liquid with a low boiling point. This liquid is transferred to water where steam is used in a generator. This process is simple, cheap and effective.

Solar panels come in different forms and there is no exact shape for one. There are different versions of solar power as well. There is concentrated solar power, which is a sea of mirrors combined together to attract the sun’s heat. These are usually out in the desert and use thermal energy to create ways to heat homes, heat water and power machines. This type of energy is a little more expensive than wind energy, but costs less than photovoltaic energy, which is commonly used in households.

It has become cost effective to use solar power to heat and power your home. In the beginning stages of the production of solar panels, it took adventurous people to take a chance on it. Since the early stages, solar panels have been modified to attract to sun better. Different types of metal have been tested to see what works best. In the concentrated solar panels, which is also known as parabolic trough solar, aluminum is the best overall metal for its ability to attract the sun and sturdiness in an outside environment. The technology is getting cheaper for residents to use as the process gets more refined.

Solar panels are important to the evolution of the society. It is important for countries, such as the United States, to move away from the dependency on foreign oil and to use energy resources that are readily available. No one can deny the sun isn’t a steady resource. Even on cloudy days, there should be enough light and leftover energy to power homes through the day. More countries have to discover ways to use solar panels as part of everyday life. The problem is it is still cheaper to use fossil fuels in the short term. In the long run, solar panels will be everywhere making energy cheaper than before.

Anna asked:

Every day, households around the world are using up the planet’s resources for energy. If this continues, these energy sources will be depleted quickly -unless alternative renewable energy sources are utilized.

One of the energy sources that modern technology has recently put to good use is solar energy. Solar energy isn’t anything new, but new technology advancements have placed solar power more into the mainstream, and it may one day be one of our primary sources of power. -

Advantages of Solar Energy

Since solar energy comes directly from the sun, it is not only renewable, but also accessible in any part of the world. As long as the proper equipment is utilized, unlimited amounts of solar power can be collected and put to good use.

Solar power is also one of the cleanest forms of energy, since it creates no pollution, and produces no greenhouse gases or waste products. For residential uses, the use of solar power minimizes negative impacts on the surrounding environment, making it a safer alternative to wind or hydro power.

Not only is solar energy non-pollutant, in terms of gases, but it also causes zero noise pollution – since there are no moving parts in any of the devices which are used to capture the sunlight. Due to the fact that no moving parts are used, maintenance costs are low as well – only occasional cleaning and periodic battery replacements are needed. Most manufacturers of solar panels provide twenty-year warranties for their equipment, guaranteeing long-life operation.

Solar panels placed on rooftops also double as a heat absorbers, slightly cooling the top area of the house which is directly below the roof.

Disadvantages of Solar Energy

The most obvious drawback of solar energy is its sole dependence on the sun. Once the weather becomes cloudy, or night strikes, energy collection comes to a halt. However, recent advancements of technology now allow the generated power to be stored in special batteries which provide roughly enough electricity to last a night.

This is why solar-powered devices, including flashlights, are gaining in popularity and are proving to be efficient energy savers. Solar panels can also be expensive, because of the materials that are used to create them. And even when these materials are taken out of the equation, the entire process, considering the other devices involved, can be a bit costly. This includes portable devices that utilize solar energy. But most of the cost involved is in the initial purchase and installation of a solar power system – not running costs.

Fortunately, there are some people who sell damaged solar cells, which are much cheaper. These damaged solar cells can be used to build fully functional solar panels, using the application of simple do-it-yourself techniques. Although in every part of the world, there is at least some point in time when the sun shines, it is also true that direct sunlight is needed in order to make the most of the sun’s energy – and to generate the highest amounts of power. This significantly restricts the placement of solar panels. And some areas in the world may receive little benefit, due to lesser sunlight.

What’s the Bottom Line?

More research and development continues to be invested into this growing technology, and that’s a good sign for the future of our households – as solar power may one day be used more frequently than other energy sources. Of course, solar energy isn’t perfect, but it makes a great complimentary addition to other energy forms.

John Tahan asked:

Yes you may say but how does solar energy works. Keep reading about how does solar energy works in the following paragraph.

Solar energy can reduce your electric and heating bill by and incredible amount leaving you with the savings to enjoy life a little and save for the future. Solar energy is about a technology that converts the sun energy into electric current with the help of solar panels. The mechanics behind solar energy is the work of the all mighty God; the sun’s incredible energy is produced thanks to the help of hydrogen through nuclear fusion that travels directly to the earth. The receiving solar panels convert the rays into electric current that are stored in batteries.

Heating by solar power is a free way of heating. When you heat using solar power you use a source that will direct the heat from the sunlight during the daytime to your solar source. A solar source is a device that you use to attract and trap the heat from the sun. Just like a car out in the parking lot gets hot when it faces the midday sun and the windows are rolled up. The seats can become very hot, too hot to sit on. These seats are a solar source because they trapped the heat inside and didn’t want to let them go. When this happens the seats will still be warm long after the sun quits shining directly on that car.

Once you understand how solar power works and how solar energy works, we must realize that cleaning up the environment will enable us to take advantage of the sun for solar energy, the thick layer of pollution around our planet puts limitation in the concentration and *********** of sun rays to the earth. How does solar energy works is no mystery to the scientist, solar energy is used around the world and even the space shuttle uses solar energy.

One thing is certain, the benefit of knowing how does solar energy works and how it is used to help people live better around the world, is a positive step in the right direction in the cleaning up of our planet.

Xavier Tikadar asked:

Solar energy is radiated from the sun through forms of heat and light, this powers the Earth’s climate and sustains life. Today’s technologies can make use of this energy resource. Simply, solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electric power. The technologies that are used to convert the sunlight into power are called photovoltaics, there are also other technologies that have been used such as concentrating solar thermal devices but a lot of the experimental devices such as thermal converters, solar chimneys and solar ponds have also been used.

Solar energy is a much safer and energy efficient way of creating electricity, the use of solar energy has now become an important component to consider when designing a building. This is what thermal mass is used for; because it preserves the heat that the sunshine delivers to the building and can then transfer that heat into electricity. There are also solar water heaters which are a much more efficient way of heating swimming pools, and are a great idea for large hotels and sports pools, which use up a lot of the earths non-renewable fuels.

We also use solar power in agriculture, in particular greenhouses, in case you’ve always wondered what they are for, now you know, because they grow specialty crops, which are difficult to grow out side in the normal atmosphere, instead, the greenhouse uses the photovoltaics, which cause the plants to photosynthesize, which causes them to grow faster and stronger. There are also photovoltaic-powered water pumps for grazing cattle. There are also evaporation ponds which can work in the city and in the country; they are used to harvest salt and clean streams of contaminants.

In the poorer areas of the world, solar distillation and disinfection techniques produce potable water for millions of people. Also for families, and large buildings, family-scale cookers and larger solar kitchens concentrate sunlight for cooking, and in the more industrial work places, more sophisticated concentrating technologies magnify the rays of the sun for high-temperature material testing, metal smelting and industrial chemical production. A range of prototype solar vehicles provide ground, air and sea transportation.

How do the solar power technologies work? Here is an example:

The simplest form of solar energy collection is the FLAT PLATE COLLECTOR, this is a long flat rectangle which ideally would be fixed on to a roof or building in a sunny area.

Dark metal plates absorb and preserve the heat. Coils of tubing are looped throughout the collector, next to the metal plates with air, water or an anti-freeze solution circulating within them. The heat is transferred into the coils and thus the fluid/air as it circulates through the tubing. The air or fluid is either used immediately (as hot water or to heat a room, pool, etc.) or it is transferred to a well insulated holding tank for later use.

These are capable of reaching temperatures of 82 degrees Celsius which is great for heating water or a room.

Donald Whitehead asked:

Utilizing wind power and solar energy or the power coming from the sun’s rays has many benefits. Let us take a closer look on each of them.

•Solar energy saves money.

In 2006, we saw the highest jump on residential electric rate. In some areas of the country, as

much as a 60% increase was seen. Some cities in the state of Florida experienced an increase just this month (Jan-09) to start out the new year with. Many experts agree that the trend will likely continue in the years to come. This means that you have to pay larger sums of cash to sustain your monthly electric consumption. However by producing your own power, with the use of eitherwind power, solar energy or both you can prevent paying the high cost of energy – especially now when energy prices Keep fluctuating. Should American households switch to other types of alternative energy the nation’s spending on imported oil will diminish greatly.

•Both Wind Power and Solar Energy are environmentally-friendly resources.

The issue of global warming is a serious problem and it can not go away on it’s own. It is a Global concern which means that people all over the world need to take part in it’s recovery. The use of renewable resources, such as the ones in this article is a fantastic way for everyone to take part in doing their share to help save this planet, Using these two resources will have a great impact on our planet recovering from sustained damage already done if it were a worldwide effort. They are both sustainable and renewable unlike gas, coal and oil that most utility companies use. They do not produce any byproducts so they can’t pollute the air or do any harm whatsoever. Since they don’t emit greenhouse gases, they simply can’t contribute to global warming. Using wind power and or solar energy reduces demand for fossil fuel and reduces the nation’s dependence on foreign energy sources.

•Government gives incentives to those who use alternative forms of energy.

Many people are still discouraged to install these remarkable marvels because of various reasons. Costs is one reason, procrastination is another one and ignorance, not having a full understanding of just how effective this technology really is and staying in the dark ages of evolution and not excepting the giant step that it has made in progression.

Some states like California offers federal tax credits as much as $2000 and up front rebates that covers 20% to 30% of the total system cost for systems that are required to be installed by contracted companies in this field rather than being able to take full advantage of DIY offers where home owners who are capable of installing their own systems via wind power generator and solar energy kits that can be purchased for as little as $100-200 dollars. These type of kits also comes with very explicit instructions in both text and video tutorials plus support. These types of offers are relatively good considering the substantial increase of energy costs in recent years. They are very practical when it comes to just how much money they can actually save home owners in other wise month to month high power bill expenses. Along with tax credits home owners can also expect substantial property value increases too!

Note: Due to the increasing number of households who want to switch into alternative forms of

energy, the incentive levels decline. Check with your state government for the rates it offers if you are thinking about making a switch.

•Wind Power and Solar Power systems alike are dependable and require little or no

maintenance. Wind Power systems are typically windmills/wind turbines that have built in generators mounted right behind the propellers which are powered by the wind and as they spin generates electrical current which goes through inverters to adjust the current as it is saved in batteries for use to power homes or any appliance, whatever the intention of construction was for. Applications for usage is not limited.

Photovoltaic (PV) cells or solar panels that are used in solar power systems are capable of providing electricity also. The only difference between solar and wind is solar gets it’s power from the sun and wind gets it power from generators which are mounted inside windmills. Neither require little or no maintenance. Solar panels like wind power generators lasts for 20 years ar more before needing to be replaced. Both are excellent resources for sustained reliability. Generally wind power and solar energy systems are installed together for a more consistent, more reliable energy resource. When the wind isn’t blowing the sun can charge the solar panels and when the sun is down and the wind should be blowing the wind generator can help in the power production process.

This article MUST NOT be changed or altered in any way.
Darren Chow asked:

How does solar energy work? Sunlight is required to be converted into usable energy form so as to be used by energy-consuming appliances. The ways of converting sun-rays depends on what you need. For example, to dry your clothes you need only direct sunlight. But to power satellites, a storage mechanism along with sunlight is required. And to power cars, their hybrid batteries need to be charged by sun-rays.

The most common method of using solar energy is to store them in photovoltaic cells. This method was first used in U.S. space satellites in 1950s. The cells are made from silicon. When sunlight enters the cells, it causes the electrons to move about. The electrons then move towards the front side of the solar panels. This causes an imbalance of the electrons between the front and back side of the panels. On joining the two surfaces, a conductor is formed, just like a wire, and current begins to flow. The individual solar cells are arranged together in a PV module and the modules are grouped together to form an array. This current is used to charge cells and this energy is used to light lamps, tube lights and also to drive cars now. The current can also be used to run appliances.

Another method of using solar energy is to direct the solar rays to a convergence point using a curved reflector and then make a current flowing system like a photo cell and store energy. This method is now used in India and U.S.

Solar energy is available all around the world and is a free energy source with little or no pollution contribution. Its conversion to usable forms of energy has become possible in recent years and more and more advanced and optimized methods are available to us to harness its full potential.

The sun may rescue us all in the energy crisis now we are facing.

If you are interested in solar energy, I advise you to visit this website to learn more. This site contain information about how to make solar panel and also wind generators at home.

http://www.GreenEnergy4Home.com

Anna asked:

Solar energy consists of the light and heat emitted by the sun, in the form of electromagnetic radiation.

With today’s technology, we are able to capture this radiation and turn it into usable forms of solar energy – such as heating or electricity.

Although one could go into technical dissertations on the subject of electromagnetic radiation, how it is converted into solar energy, and the exact qualities of its electromagnetic rays, this is not something the average person needs or wants to know.

But in order to be able to benefit from the use of solar energy, there are a few facts you should know. Knowing these facts can assist you to make sound decisions, when looking at the use of solar power as a clean energy source for your home, RV, or whatever the case may be.

Environmental Facts about Solar Energy

All life on earth is dependent upon solar energy. In fact, without solar energy, there would be no life at all. Even the lowest life forms, such as plankton and microbes, need solar energy (in the form of sunlight) in order to survive.

Solar energy is completely environmental friendly, producing absolutely no carbon emissions or other harmful byproducts whatsoever.

Solar energy can be used successfully and cost-effectively just about anywhere on the planet. You do not need to live in a tropical or desert climate in order to benefit from the use of solar energy. Solar power has been used successfully in many cold climates and even in the polar regions.

Every area of the United States of America receives enough sunlight to benefit from and make use of solar energy and solar technology.

Currently, the cheapest and most effective way of using solar energy in your home is through the use of solar water heating systems. In fact, solar water heating systems have been commercially available in the United States for over a 100 years.

Solar energy can be used for heating homes effectively in cold climates, as well as in warm climates. In fact, for decades now, solar heating has been in use several cold-climate northern European countries.

Solar energy technology has advanced to the point where it can be now be a viable and cost-effective replacement for regular grid-electricity.

Solar energy is rapidly increasing in popularity – so much so that the demand for solar-powered gadgets is currently greater than the supply.

Facts about Solar Energy Usage

Solar energy can be used to provide electricity, heating and hot water for homes.

Solar energy can also be used to heat swimming pools. Many pools in Scandinavia and Europe are in fact heated with solar energy.

Solar Energy can be used to power vehicles, such as solar powered cars, and even a solar powered airplanes. NASA has successfully designed, built, and tested an airplane which is powered wholly by solar energy.

A few examples are: solar battery chargers, solar flashlights, solar calculators, solar radios, solar-powered attic fans, solar power backpacks (to recharge batteries for small devices), hybrid solar chargers (for cell phones, satellite phones, and more), solar-powered garden lights … and much, much more.

No matter where you look, alternative energy is the topic du jour. Driven by the economics of record-high crude oil, the spotlight is shifting to non-traditional renewable energy sources, particularly solar power.

But while solar stocks were some of the biggest gainers for much of last year, recently the solar power industry has taken big hits – with several key leaders such as First Solar (FLSR) SunPower (SPWR) and Evergreen Solar (ESLR) down as much as 50% off their 52 week highs.

To find out what’s going on with solar energy and the other renewable energy sources, we recently surveyed 182 respondents working directly in the alternative energy industry.

Solar Leads – Solar energy continues to show the most momentum of all alternative energy segments, according to industry respondents. Not only has it shown strong gains since our previous survey in February 2007, but it also leads in each of the following areas:

* Most Rapid Economic Growth – Past 12 Months: When asked which alternative energy sector has experienced the fastest growth over the past year, solar energy (49%) topped the list – up a whopping 14-pts since our previous survey in February. In comparison, Biomass – including biofuels and bio-products – came in at 41%.

* Most Rapid Economic Growth – Next 12-24 Months: Going forward, respondents see solar energy (58%; up 20-pts) as experiencing the most rapid growth in the industry for the next one-to-two years.

* Most Momentum – Next 5 Years: Over the long term, solar energy also retains its strength, as 31% of respondents (up 5-pts) say it will be the top sector for the next half decade.

In sum, solar energy leads all of the other major alternative energy categories in terms of rapid economic growth. Solar energy is also seen as experiencing the biggest technology breakthroughs (27%; up 2-pts). But perhaps most importantly, solar cells are expected to be affordable enough to achieve a competitive return on investment within seven years (by 2015).

“Demand for solar cells is unquestionably robust, the price of oil is trending higher, and solar tax credits will likely be extended,” according to ChangeWave Analyst Josh Levine. The forces are all lining up exceptionally well for the solar industry. It’s the right time for investors to be exposed to the sun and invest in solar stocks.”

According to solar industry experts, the sector’s growth is being propelled forward by global photovoltaics manufacturers like First Solar (FSLR), SunPower Corp. (SPWR) and SunTech Power Holdings (STP) – companies that have developed superior business models and excelled in project management.

Levine adds that the next big challenge for the solar industry is the scaling of production facilities for mass production at the gigawatt level. “The next generation of leaders will be those companies that are best equipped to leverage the latest innovations in materials research through manufacturing know-how,” he said.

Clearly, solar energy has the momentum in our latest ChangeWave survey. We’ll continue tracking solar energy and other non-traditional energy sources in the alternative energy industry for new opportunities in 2009.
